[ bell tolling ] for the next hour, we'll hear from family members because they want a voice, and we want to give to them. a voice to tell us about their children, how special they were, the lives they lived. we don't want to just focus on how they die. we want to focus on how they lived and the lives they touched and they have touched so many lives. we'll hear from the mcdonnell family who grac

she has been in newtown yesterday. according to "the washington post," six of the welfare deadliest mass shootings in this country's history had happened since 2007. i will start with a simple question here. why are these shootings taking even more victims it seems? >> well, they are taking more victims, number one, because we see shooters using semiautomatic weapons. most of the time you look at the mass shootings, probably in the last 15 to 30 years, it is either semiautomatic pistols, which normally have about 15, 16 rounds or high capacity. they could have 20 or they use assault rifles which, again, have 2035 rounds. so the shooters are going in and they are better armed and have high capacity weapons and they are obviously shooting to kill. in this case, the most innocent of those what do some of the shooters -- what are some of the traits they all have in common? >> well, you know, recently -- first of all, i want to be very quick to say we can't put everybody in the same pot. we can't lump them all together. we

i would hope our members that what we saw in newtown isn't lingering with us, we don't remain passionate about it only a month later. and as soon as we get those recommendations, i will be putting forward very specific proposals. i will be talking about them in my state of the union and we will be working with interested members of congress to try and get something done. the idea that we would say this is terrible, this the tragedy, never again, and we don't have the sustained attention span to be able to get this done over the next several months doesn't make sense. i have more confidence the american people do not. i have more confidence in paris, the mothers and fathers have been meeting over the last several days all across the country from all political persuasions, including a lot of gun owners who say you know what, this time we've got to do things differently. >> what about the nra? president obama: the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers. and i would suspect they have been impacted by this as well. hopefully they will do some self reflection. herh

i can't speak for everybody in newtown. but i think there is a lot of shock and disgust right now in newtown, when they heard that the nra came to the table today and said that the solution for what happened to us in newtown was to have more guns on the streets. to have more guns in our schools. that we don't have enough assault weapons out there to adequately protect us. this was as revolting and as tone-deaf a statement as i have ever seen from any political entity in my short time in politics. and as you said, it ignores reality. you know, the shooting in colorado was one example. but there were plenty of guns in fort hood, and that didn't stop the madman from spraying the bullets. there were plenty of guns in virginia tech and that didn't stop the horror there either. there were a lot of people that watched wayne lapierre, and frankly i'm glad that they saw it. my colleagues that seem to be led around by the nra on a daily basis saw it. because they saw a man in an organization that is just absolutely fundamentally disc
